A Conversation With KURENT FLOW!

K.U.R.E.N.T. F.L.O.W.
"Kick Unique Rhymes Every Night Till Fakers Leave Our World"
THE BAY AREA

Me: So who are you? And who do you rep?
Kurent: I am K.U.R.E.N.T. F.L.O.W. You know cuz I Kick Unique Rhymes Every Night Till Fakers Leave Our World... I rep myself, Kurent Minds, Major Operationz, and this thing that me and Nater got going on out here in the Bay. Kickin!
Me: Sick! Let's take it to the beginning. What music inspired you to get into the hip-hop game?
Kurent: I started making beats on Acid Pro back when I was 13. Didn't like that fact that I only could work with pre-made loops so I got a pirated version of Fruity Loops and started there. I've moved from that to Reason 4 to Pro Tools to Logic 8. Right now I'm stuck on Logic. Didn't really start rapping until a couple of years ago. I had a group by the name of "Minds of Illusion". It was dope but people weren't focused so things fell apart. I ended up meeting Nater and we started collabing on hella tracks. Funny thing is... We haven't met face to face yet.
Me: That's awesome... Neither have we but we're still kickin' shit off, and if things work out I might be in the Bay soon.
Haha!
Kurent: Dope. I'll meet him soon though.
Me: What would you say is the style or flavor you're trying to represent to the masses?
Kurent: My style is UNDERGROUND. I like the fact that I can get my point across, but the listener has to connect the dots. I make them work a little bit. I don't like what they play on the radio these days. You know... The cats that hop on the mic and say a total of 10 words through out the whole song. That shit is garbage. Nater got that ill flow that makes you think about what he's saying. Plus the dude got rhythm. I think that's why we are gonna kill it and show these fake emcees how it should be done. I like to adapt to the track. If the beat is fast, then I might rap fast... If the beat is slow, then I might slow it down a little bit. Mostly... I'm trying to say as much as I can within that 16 bar time period that I have.

Me: I first heard "We On" right after Nater and myself made "One Love" and man, I was fucking hooked! You had me sold!
Kurent: Right on.
Me: I like direction and word play as much as the mc taking you somewhere.
Kurent:  Word play is key. It shows skill.
Me: That first verse on "We On" sets a high tone for the rest of the track...
Kurent: Yeah... I was pissed off when I wrote that. If you couldn't tell.
Me: Your voice has a very familiar tone to it. Like I've known you for a grip... That's some real shit.
Kurent: Right on bro.... That's good to hear.
Me: Whats next on your plate? What are you currently working on?
Kurent: I want to drop an album or EP with Nater. That dude is dope and I know we can take over this shit. I'm actually listening to an instrumental I made last night. Just trying to perfect my flow and the beat as well. It's a love/hate type of track but the beat wouldn't tell you that. Its about bouncing on a female cuz she don't know how to act. I'll be sending it to Nater later on tonight. I love staying up all night... I get so much done. During the day I'm a slave to school and stuff like that... When the sun goes down and everybody is asleep... I can just focus on this music.
Me: If there was anyone you could rock the stage with in the underground scene... Who would that be? And why?

Kurent: MF MUTHA FUCKIN DOOM!!! I got high one night and put his CD in... I was blown away. His word play and rhyming skills are like no other. Most definitely it would have to be DOOM.

Me: Nice. Doom's on Minneapolis' own Rhymesayers label...

I don't think cats would disagree... That's a solid rapper through and through.
Kurent: Yup.
Me: So I'm rifling through some of your music... Your beat style is sick.
Kurent: Right on.
Me: Who's your influences with beat making?
Kurent: When I had my MPC it was 9th Wonder and J-Dilla... They are still my main influences but I try to do what I hear in my head. All of the beat makers out there know what I'm talking about. I could be in the middle of traffic and just start hearing some dope shit in my head... That's when I pull out my phone and record it. Once I get to the house I recreate what I beat-boxed on my phone. From the mind to the computer and then eventually into the ears of the fans. It always starts from what I hear in my head.
Me: That's fresh... You definitely have some nice layered drums. And the sound is there ready to hit out the park!
Kurent: Right on.
Me: I don't think cats know about "Equal". A Dope track! I will post it here... It's a deep track and I'm loving your and Nater's change ups.

Kurent: Yeah... The tracks are just gonna get crazier and crazier. We can't go backwards. Forward is the only direction we know.
Me: You cats just follow suit, there's definitely that chemistry that must be there between mc's...
Kurent: Has to be in order for the track to feel authentic.
Me: So you gotten the chance to do shows? The live sound?
Kurent: I've performed at a party before but I've yet to hop on stage and really feel what it is like to have a crowd in front of your face waiting to hear some dope shit. I will probably be hoppin' on stage sometime this year... Hopefully with Nater.

Me: I'm sure it will be hot, when you do. Your presence on the mic is definitely demanding.
Kurent: Yeah. Once I start... I'm not going to be able to stop. People hit me up about doing shows but it's always the people that want you to sell 25 tickets, haha! I think I'm gonna start with open mic... Then move up from there.
Me: That's kinda how I feel about making beats. I've gotten a chance to do a few tours and been rocking the stage here locally off and on as a DJ for 15 years but man the production aspect is just driving me... I hope sometime to share a stage with you. And I'm thankful Nater got you on my album!
Kurent: We will have to come out there one time. I was out there a few years ago... Hella cold.
Me: Yesssss sir, hella cold. I'm Hispanic and I need to get back to the rainforrest...
Kurent: Haha! I couldn't stand it out there.
Me: So, anyone you would like to give thanks or props to?
Kurent: Give props to all the real emcees that do this because they love it... Not for the money. Props to all the emcees that are bosses and not slaves. Those who say whatever they want on the mic, not what they're told. I gotta thank my son... He is my main motivation for getting up in the morning. My father for teaching me not to be a punk, and of course... G.O.D. for giving me this gift.
